FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

West Cork Classic Retro

And I lost my perfect record!

So, for the uninformed, a Retro is a type of event that mirrors the type of rallies held in the 1950's & 60's, before they invented special stage rallying. It's an event that takes in night navs, autotests, speed tests and endurance, with the event lasting three days. Also, the event is an annual "must do" for the Red Mist bunch, with Big T and Camper renewing their rivalry.

This year was interesting, as Camper had beaten Big T & Steak for the last two years, but was now driving this year. Camper's navi was a pure green horn, having never navigated before and was instantly christened "Fraggle" by Big T. Unfortunately, the name's stuck so tough if you don't like it! Also, Suggs had "borrowed" Tadgh O'Shea's car for the weekend, but couldn't prise Tadgh out of the passenger seat, so he navigated!

So, for the weekend. The Friday night section started badly for both me & Fraggle and Suggs & Tadgh, as the slot we were to take was blocked by a cattle lorry. It was parked with it's lights off, so we all though that it was parked in a yard, not blocking the road we wanted. It had moved by the time Big T and Steak came along, so they lost no time, while we maxed the test! They were leading us well at Friday night halt.

Saturday morning was another disaster for us, as Big T pulled more ahead of us, but by Saturday evening, we had the deficit  pulled back to 40 penalties. Sunday morning was a poor one for us, and Big T & Steak beat us by about 100 penalties at the end.

We knew Sunday lunch-time that we were beaten, so the battle of the three tests then started. I was "persuaded" to do some of the speed tests and the last three were chosen for the show-down....

In Cambells, We (ie, myself & Fraggle) beat Big T & Steak simply because Big T took the wrong turn in the test and maxed it! Ballygurteen was a different story, with Big T beating us. The score was one all going into the last test in Enniskeane. There, I threw caution to the wind, along with learning how to throw the Escort and beat Big T by one second! So, in the Battle of the Tests, I beat Big T, while he beat us in the overall event.

So, at the end of the event, Big T & Steak had a first in class 8, myself & Fraggle had a second in class 8, while Suggs & Tadgh came third in class 7.

Oh, I was "strongly reminded" by Suggs to tell the World that he had the fastest time overall in Cambells, beating all the other competitors in the process. God, he's going to be insufferable now.....
